| Boat trip along the Guanabara Bay When The Portuguese arrived on Guanabara on January 1st 1502, they thought they were on a great river mouth, so they baptized the place as Rio de Janeiro. Whey they became to explore further (years later), they found it was a huge bay with crystalline water. The Guanabara Bay It is the largest bay of the world in volume of water and has several islands, as the Goversnors island, Fundão and Snakes island. At the Western shore lies Rio de Janeiro, and East Rio's neighbour city Niteroi. The bay is not only historically the berth of Rio de Janeiro, it became a political, economical and social center of the country for many years. The Bay is without doubt one of the most beautiful in the world! Views on Rio from the Bay are spectacular, with the districts fo Glória, Flamenco, Botafogo and Urca lying rdirectly on the shore of the Bay. Moreover, you will be able to see the Pão de Açucar from a very different angle. Highlights along the route include the Fortresses of São João and Santa Cruz, Adam and Eve's beach, the Island of Mocanguê and snake Island, the bridge connecting Rio and Niteroi and the museum of modern art designed by Brazil's great architect Niemeyer. | Schooner Tour Tropical Islands
West of the city of Rio de Janeiro lies a true tropical paradise, with green islands dotted in the blue, transparent and warm Sepitiba Bay, a huge bay with green tropical islands, blue waters and nice sandy beaches.. The rich local flora and fauna make a strong contrast with Rio's bussy and dynamic urban life. We will drive along the coastal road about 1 ½ hours at west of Rio de Janeiro, till the city of Itacuruçá. At the harbour of Itacuruçá we will get along our schooner to start our tour along the tropical islands in the bay. With a bit of luck you will be able to spot dolphins, giant king-fishers, parrots or sea-turtles. A stop is made for a swim and then the schooner continues to the island of Itacuruça where a delicious lunch self-service buffet will be waiting for you. There will be a time to explore the Island before returning to Itacuruça. At the time of colonisation by the Europeans, the local indians in this area helped the Jesuits building their churches (in the language spoken by the local indians, Tupi-Guaraní: Ita = stone, Curuçá = Cross). People in this area still live mainly from fishing in the paradisical blue waters of the Baia de Sepitiba. Included: Transport, lunch and English speaking guide. |
