Excursions Foz do Iguaçu
Macuco Safari – spectacular boatride as close as possible to the falls
We will start our tour with a short ride in open jeep-towed wagons through the dense tropical jungle. A multi-lingual guide will point out some examples of the flora and fauna of the local flora and fauna; orchids, palm trees, bromeliads, centenaria trees, as well as wild animals that occasionally cross the trail. The motorised trail is followd by an optional hike (600m) that leads to a waterfall baptized "Macuco Falls". The waterfall - perfect for a refreshing dip on days of intense heat - spills down from a height of approximately 20 meters. Access is via a stairway carved into the ancient rock.

The last stop is at the Macuco Safari docks, on the Brazilian side of the Iguassu River. Here we will enter our inflatable bi-motor boat and travel up-river, passing the canyon facing the rapids till we reach the main falls. Our captain manuvers the boat in order to get close enough to provide all passengers with a very impressive view of the falls. A quick and refreshing shower.

Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant
The worlds biggest hydroelectric plant has been build in co-operation between Brazil and Paraguay and devoured astronomical quantities of building materials. With the used concrete, 220 Maracanã stadiums could have been built, the used steel would have been sufficient for 380 Eiffel towers. Its arch dam reaches a height of 196m and the accumulated water is constantly falling over 18 electric turbines. Doing so, Itaupú produces sufficient energy to cover 95% of the energy demand of Paraguay and 25% of Brazil. Its overall capacity corresponds to 10 nuclear power-plants.

At the Reception Center the visit starts by showing an explanatory movie about the construction and operation of the plant. Continue by bus to the principal viewing platform where the giant spillways can be observed. An impressive water spectacle can be appreciated as well as a panoramic view of the entire power plant.
